Hi! My name is Ava, and I am a first-year student at Vassar College planning to double major in Chemistry and Science, Technology, and Society (STS). I am passionate about all things STEM and love learning about new interesting things and sharing that knowledge with others. I have a strong academic background across a range of subjects, including calculus up through multivariable, biology, chemistry, anatomy, and statistics. I have also prepared for my fair share of AP exams, so I am familiar with the strategies needed to feel confident going into them and to score well. I bring experience working with students through my previous jobs with youth services librarians, where I enjoyed finding engaging ways to get kids excited about reading and learning. Additionally, I have three younger sisters who have given me plenty of experience explaining concepts in different ways and helping with homework. Outside of academics, I love running, reading, baking, and crafting. A fun fact about me is that I have been playing the double bass for 8 years, and I have a pet rabbit named Goose. I’m excited to support students by tailoring my tutoring approach to their individual needs and helping them feel confident and successful in their learning.

Laura

Tutoring subjects:
STEM courses such as biology, chemistry, anatomy, psychology, etc., mathematics (including statistics), Spanish, the SAT, and soccer (I'm the goalie for Vassar Soccer!)
Test results:
SAT: 1470
Hi! My name is Laura, and I am a sophomore at Vassar College studying Biochemistry with a Hispanic Studies minor on the pre-med track. My main academic interests and coursework experience include STEM courses such as biology, chemistry, anatomy, psychology, etc. Along with these subjects, I am also able to tutor mathematics (including statistics) and Spanish. My experience preparing for AP exams in high school will also allow me to assist in preparing for these types of tests. My past experiences tutoring mainly come from my time as a student intern for a General Chemistry class at Vassar, where I attended lectures and hosted office hours and review sessions to be a resource for students. During this time I was able to develop successful strategies for preparing material for students, answering questions, and helping students find a deeper understanding of concepts. I was also a peer tutor in high school, so I have my fair share of experience with tutoring! Outside of the classroom, I am on the varsity women’s soccer team at Vassar, where I have been the starting goalkeeper for the past 2 seasons, and just won a Liberty League Championship this fall! I would love to be able to do individual or small group sessions with students who share the same passion for soccer and to pass along any knowledge I have! I am a huge believer in the effectiveness of one-on-one tutoring, because it can be geared toward the student’s individual needs and learning style. I am extremely excited to help students develop a better understanding and interest in whatever subject I can help them with, and to also help them find the strategies that work best for them in the future!

Sam

Tutoring subjects:
Math, Physics, French, rock climbing, ultimate frisbee
Test results:
SAT: 1490 (Math 750, Reading and Writing 740)
AP Scores: Calculus BC (5), English Language (3), English Literature (3), Environmental Science (4), French (5), Human Geography (5), Physics 1 (5), U.S. History (5), World History (4)
Hi, I'm Sam, a sophomore at Vassar College double majoring in Math and Physics. I love working with numbers and the logic behind them, as well as applying them to real-world phenomena. I am also fluent in French (I am half-French), and strong in most STEM subjects. I have experience working with children at summer camps and as a teacher's assistant at religious school. I would like to help any and every student excel, and that one-on-one tutoring is one of the best ways to give students that extra push! Outside of the classroom, I love everything outdoors. I go rock climbing both in the gym near me and outside on longer trips over school breaks. I also go hiking and camping around Dutchess County whenever I find the time, and I am on the Vassar Ultimate Frisbee team. I have previously worked at a rock climbing gym as an instructor for beginners, and would love to tutor anyone who would like to learn! Across academics and athletics, I work hard to stay active while continuing my education, and I wish to bring a hard work ethic to the students I work with, tailoring my approach to each and every student’s specific learning style.

Petar
Vassar College, Class of 2028, majoring in biology/biochemistry and minoring in chemistry/film
Tutoring subjects:
K-12 math, biology, chemistry, International Baccalaureate (IB) STEM courses, volleyball
Test scores:
International Baccalaureate (IB) program with a focus in STEM: scores of 4 and 5
Hello! My name is Petar Miocinovic, and I am a sophomore student athlete pursuing a biology/biochemistry double major and a chemistry/film double minor at Vassar College, where I play varsity volleyball. In high school, I completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) program with a focus in STEM, and achieved scores of 4 and 5 on the examinations. I have a state championship in both tennis and water polo, and multiple top-10 finishes at national championships for club volleyball where I was captain for two years. My experience in teaching comes from various places, but most notably from my time as an environmental camp educator, where I initially started working as a volunteer and was later trained by Chaminade University psychologists and the Department Of Education (DOE) for a position on the staff, teaching K-9 participants. I was also an assistant coach for a 16’s club volleyball team where I helped them achieve a 5th place finish at a national championship, and have spent time coaching other sports. I am the oldest sibling out of three children as well, which taught me patience and gave me strategies for teaching which I still employ. I thoroughly enjoy helping others learn; seeing those with whom I’ve worked with achieve their goals is very fulfilling, and remains as one of my top motivations for being a tutor. My goal is to find what works for each student to make learning as enjoyable and approachable as possible!

Destiny
Vassar College, Class of 2027, majoring in Sociology
Tutoring subjects:
Drama
Hi, my name is Destiny and you can think of me as Miss Frizzle just without the magic school bus! I can tutor across subjects, but my specialty is drama since it’s been my life for as long as I can remember. Even when my high school didn’t have an official program, I was at home still making videos and finding ways to perform. At Vassar College, I’ve been in five productions, including We Are the Tigers, Dracula, and Annie, and I would love showing your kids how fun acting can be while teaching the discipline and focus it takes to grow. Outside of tutoring, I love fashion, and spending time with my dog brownie who is featured in the picture!! But whether we’re exploring the magic of the stage or the wonders of the natural world, I bring warmth, energy, and clear goals to every lesson so students leave feeling confident, curious, and proud of what they’ve learned. I cannot wait to meet some of you soon :)
